Can Your Digestive Health Affect the Rest of Your Body?

June 28, 2016

It certainly can.

The stomach is at the center of the immune system and the intestinal lining protects a person from harmful bacteria that could affect the rest of the body. Serotonin, which is mostly produced in the stomach with the brain coming in second, connects both parts of the body. This is why, for example, feeling depressed or overanxious is enough to cause stomach problems. Common problems that occur include bloating, cramping, diarrhea and constipation. Having a poor diet can also work against the body’s favor because the connection works the other way as well; bacteria can form and grow in the stomach and make a person very sick. The digestive system’s connection to the immune system is vitally important and a digestive system that is not functioning properly will whittle away at overall health.

Colon cancer is a direct result of a poor digestive system. Polyps can form within the large intestine, which in turn can form into cancer. Colonoscopies are conducted for this very reason: to look for problems inside the colon so they can be treated or removed. Tissue samples – also called biopsies – can be removed to ascertain if disease or cancerous growth is present within the digestive system. Those who have a history of stomach problems should request an appointment for a colonoscopy as soon as possible.

For more detailed information on colon cancer and other gastrointestinal problems, contact the physicians of InSite Digestive Health Care.
